Minimum Hours Required to Qualify for a Sport Pilot or Private Pilot Certificate
To obtain a Sport Pilot or Private Pilot Certificate, there are a few required components, the largest of which is the amount of time you must spend in an aircraft at the controls.
A Sport Pilot Certificate requires a minimum of 20 hours in an airplane while a Private Pilot Certificate requires at least 40 hours. There are also several tasks you must complete for each certificate, such as solo, cross-country flight, and take-offs and landings.
Our Sport Pilot and Private Pilot curriculum guides you through the entire process to ensure that you’re maximizing your flight time and gaining proficiency throughout your training experience.
Although a Sport Pilot Certificate can be an appealing option, there are also some important limitations you should be aware of.
Please note that the attached requirements are the minimum FAA requirements, actual hours will depend on proficiency of skills demonstrated during a check-ride with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
